Héctor Lavoe, “El Cantante”, como le bautizó Rubén Blades en dicha canción de su autoría, cumple hoy 25 años de fallecido, pero siempre será recordado por su carácter vivaracho y festivo, hasta el día de su muerte, llegando a entender que “todo tiene su final”, como también promulgó en un tema.
Fue hace un cuarto de siglo que la voz de “El cantante de cantantes”, Héctor Juan Pérez Martínez, nombre verdadero de Lavoe, se apagó en el Hospital Saint Claire de Nueva York, tras varios años batallando con sida.
No obstante, temas emblemáticos que dejó a sus 46 años el nacido de una familia humilde en el barrio Bélgica de Ponce, la segunda mayor ciudad de Puerto Rico, como “Aguanilé”, “El Todopoderoso”, “Rompe Saragüey” y “Paraíso de dulzura” son el mayor legado musical de quien es considerado como uno de los más grandes salseros.

Etapa con Willie Colón
En se asoció con el trombonista y productor musical neoyorquino de origen boricua Willie Colón. El primer disco lanzado se convirtió en un clásico de la salsa: Metiendo Mano!, de Colón logró mezclar el sonido callejero de los coros, con arreglos musicales de alta factura; en tanto Rubén Blades aportó una voz fresca a la salsa utilizándola como medio para introducir contenidos con narrativa social que reflejaban las vicisitudes y encrucijadas de los emigrantes hispanos en la «Gran Manzana». De dicho álbum salieron los éxitos «Pablo Pueblo», «Plantación Adentro» y «Lluvia de tu cielo», así como también «Me recordarás», un tema de Frank Domínguez con Yomo Toro a la guitarra.
Un año más tarde, compone el álbum Siembra (). El álbum estableció nuevos paradigmas en el campo artístico y comercial y, poéticamente dirigió un mensaje de orgullo cultural, justicia social y liberación política a los latinos que vivían en el continente americano en una época de discriminación y opresión política. I first saw Ruben Blades at the offices of Fania Records around , where he worked in the mail department. Fania execs Jerry Masucci and Johnny Pacheco perceived Ruben to be the next sensation to join the first-class roster of Salsa artists and kept him close. It was recognized that Ruben had the distinguishing characteristic of sounding like the iconic Cheo Feliciano. Ruben, who was born in Panama City, was a graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Panamá with degrees in political science and had a position at the Bank of Panama while he studied law.
But Ruben anticipated a loftier career for himself and headed to Fania Records to put his plan into effect. For a while he lived with Fania artist Andy Harlow while familiarizing himself with the technique of the Fania stars. His recording career got underway in when he recorded his first solo album De Panama a New York with the orchestra of Pete Rodriguez for Alegre Records, a subsidiary of Fania Records.
