    Nennius is the traditional author of the early Latin compilation known as the 'Historia Brittonum,' which purports to give an account of British history from the time of Julius Caesar to towards the end of the 7th century A.D. In the preface he describes himself as a disciple of Elvodugus, who died in A.D. , with the title of 'chief bishop in the land of Gwynedd.' We may infer that Nennius held the same more cosmopolitan views of Christian practice as his master; but apart from his own disclaimer to any literary or intellectual pretensions, to which his poor latinity and total lack of any critical acumen bear ample witness, virtually nothing further is known of him. It may be that he was a native of the eastern districts of South Wales, as the internal evidence of his work indicates. It is unlikely that the 'Liber Commonei' at Oxford (Bodl. Auct.     The Welsh Christian monk Nennius wrote around A.D. the "Historia Brittanum" which is the first publication to contain a mention " Arthur" by name as a hero. Well, Nennius was probably an early ninth century Welsh monk, and probably wrote it. Historia Brittonum (History of the Britons) is a strange assortment of texts covering the ancestries of kings, geography, the lives of saints. It mentions Julius Cæsar, Ambrosius Aurelianus, Arthur, Patrick, and other figures. Nennius says he was a pupil of Elbodugus ( bishop of Bangor and known to have have died in )

    The Historia Brittonum has been controversial as to its date and origin. Nennius has been described as "unrestrainedly inventive" with this work. On the one hand Nennius apparently had access to no-longer available 5th century sources, but on the other hand can Nennius be entirely trusted as a thoughtful compiler of history. Apart from his native Welsh and his clerical knowledge of Latin, &#;Nennius&#; seems to have understood both Old English, and Old Irish.

    Historia Brittonum, or a History of the Britons, was purportedly written in the 8th Century by a Welsh monk called Nennius. It is one of the earliest histories of the British Isles. Nennius&#; work influenced later, better known, histories and remained influential for centuries. Many myths and legends about the origins of Britain first appeared in Historia Brittonum. It claimed that Britain was settled by Trojan. 12 battles are cited as having Arthur as a military commander, being the first text to do so. The actual authorship and precise meaning of Historia Brittonum have been subject of much scholarly debate over the last years.
