RAIMONDI Marcantonio Figlio di Battista, Marcantonio Raimondi nacque verso il Secondo quanto accolgono le ricerche recenti, il luogo di nascita fu S. Martino in Argine, località di pianura a nord-est di Bologna, mentre una tradizione recepita fino agli anni Settanta del Novecento indicava S. Andrea in Argene, nei pressi di S. Agata Bolognese (Dillon, , p. ; Giudici, , p. ). Nulla si sa della madre e poco della famiglia paterna. Le uniche notizie documentate provengono da un atto notarile del (ASBo, Notarile, Antonio Cisti, filza 3, nov. 18; Giudici, , pp. ). A quella data, il padre era già morto e Marcantonio era residente nella cappella bolognese di S. Caterina di Saragozza. Fonte unica, quel rogito, ma piuttosto ricca di informazioni. Se ne deduce che nel Marcantonio era titolare di un patronato ecclesiastico presso la cattedrale di S. Pietro, per il quale agiva in prima persona; doveva pertanto avere almeno 25 anni, il che porta a fissare al o poco prima la sua data di nascita (Faietti-Oberhuber, , p. 55). Marcantonio Raimondi (ital. Marcantonio Raimondi; /82 Argini, Italy - /34, Bologna, Italy) - Italian engraver and artist. He studied the art of creating engravings from a jeweler and artist from Bologna Francesco Francha. He was a favorite student of the master and successfully worked with the blackening technique of silver. Once in Venice, he was struck by engravings Albrecht Durer. The painter spent all his savings on them, began to make copies, repeating even the artist's monogram. They were taken for originals and bought with pleasure. In , Albrecht Dürer sued Marcantonio Raimondi. The sentence was not too harsh - the court allowed to copy the engravings, but forbade to depict someone else's monogram on them.
In , the artist moved to Rome and met with Rafael Santi. When he was shown the engravings of Marcantonio Raimondi, he exclaimed: "This is the best I've ever seen." Thanks to the help of Raphael, the artist opens a printing shop. He hires assistants and makes copies of the works of the master and other painters. Marcantonio Raimondi, also simply Marcantonio, (c. - c. ) was an Italian engraver, known for being the first important printmaker whose body of work consists mainly of prints copying paintings. He is therefore a key figure in the rise of the reproductive print. He also systematized a technique of engraving that became dominant in Italy and elsewhere. Around , Marcantonio was briefly imprisoned by Pope Clement VII for making the I Modi set of erotic engravings, from the designs of Giulio Romano. His engraving of the Judgement of Paris, dated or , after Raphael, became the composition source for Édouard Manet when he painted the The Luncheon on the Grass.
