James Watt fue un inventor, ingeniero mecánico y químico escocés, creador de la máquina de vapor de agua (mediante la mejora de la máquina de Newcomen), pieza fundamental de la primera Revolución Industrial.
Juventud
James Watt nace el 19 de enero de en Greenock, Escocia. De niño era delgado y sufría de migrañas y dolores de muelas.
Por otro lado, era gran estudioso de matemáticas en la primaria, y también aprendió carpintería de parte de su padre.
Este último era un carpintero de profesión que construía desde muebles para buques hasta la construcción de los mismos.
Watt aprendió las bases de la navegación en buques: cuadrantes, brújulas y telescopios y a los 15 años ya quería convertirse en creador de instrumentos.
Su padre había perdido mucho dinero debido a un naufragio y se interesó en los beneficios que podría obtener de las ambiciones de su hijo.
Educación
Sin embargo, no había oportunidades de formación para lo que James quería en Greenock, así que en , fue enviado a Glasgow, Escocia y allí conoció a Robert Dick a través de un familiar que trabajó en la Universidad de Glasgow.

Early life
James Watt was born in Greenock, Scotland on 18 January Due to ill health as a child, he was mostly educated at home by his mother. He also helped out in his father&#;s workshops &#; where he learnt many practical skills of basic engineering.
Pursuing his mechanical and scientific interests, Watt went to Glasgow and then London to be trained in the profession of a mathematical instrument maker. His skills in producing instruments was recognised by members of Glasgow University and he was encouraged to set up a workshop close to the University. Although he never had the funds to study at university properly, he showed an inherent capacity to teach himself. He learnt German and Italian so that he could study more scientific manuals. إشتهر بعد تطويرهِ لحُجرة تكثيف مُنفصلةٍ في المُحرك البُخاري.
أدى إختراعهُ هذا إلى زيادةٍ كبيرةٍ في كفاءة المُحرك البُخاري، الذي لعب دورًا مُهمًا في تعزيز مكانة المُحركات البُخارية في الثَّورة الصّناعيَّة.
ولد واط في بلدة غرينوك في اسكُتلندا في الثامن عشر من كانون الثاني \يناير عام
عمل في بداية حياته كصانعٍ للأدوات الهندسيَّة، ثم المُحركات البخاريَّة.
عمل عام على إصلاح مُحرك نيوكومن «Newcomen» البُخاري، وأدرك حينها أنه غير فعّال إلى حدٍ كبير، لأنَّ الطاقة تُستخدم مرارًا وتكرارًا في تسخين الأسطوانة. فكثف البُخار في حُجرةٍ معزولةٍ بعيدةٍ عن المكبس، وأصبح لديه نموذج جاهز للعمل ثم حصل على براءة اختراع بحلول عام
ورغم عدم امتلاكه البراعة الكافية في الأعمال التجارية، كان واط قادرًا على تكوين شراكة ناجحة مع ماثيو بولتن «Matthew Boulton».
أسس بولتن وواط شركة ناجحة تقوم بتأجير التَّصميم وأنتجت في وقتٍ لاحق مُحركاتٍ بُخاريةٍ جديدةٍ لاستخدامها في مجالاتٍ مُتعددة، من المناجم إلى القماش وتصنيع الصوف.
قدَّم واط على مدار الأعوام الست التالية بعض من التحسينات الإضافية على المُحرك البخاري وإزدهرت أعمال الشَّركة وأُغرقت بالطلبات.
