The Draw-A-Person Test (DAP) was developed by Florence Goodenough in as a nonverbal measure of cognitive development in children. Initially designed as a tool to estimate children’s intelligence, the test involves asking the child to draw a picture of a person, and the resulting drawing is then scored based on specific criteria. Over time, the DAP has evolved to be used not only as a measure of intellectual functioning but also as a projective test to assess personality

It is most ironic that the Draw a Man test was invented by a woman and that girls outscore boys, but in the s, women were devalued. The great Florence Goodenough realized that as children got older, their drawings became more sophisticated and thus could be used as a proxy for mental age. Goodenough&#;s test was not a good measure of IQ, but at times it was good enough (get it?).
When the test was revised in by Dale Harris, not only did he add a &#;Draw a Woman&#; subtest, but he added a quality scale so that rather than spending half an hour going through a long checklist of dozens of different criteria, psychologists could just compare a drawing they were scoring to a progression of drawings ranked from level 1 (crude stick figure) to level 12 (a detailed sketch) and judge which level it most resembled. This may sound subjective, but different judges gave very similar scores (though today machine learning could probably improve objectivity).

Florence Laura Goodenough was a pioneer in psychology and the study of gifted children. Miss Goodenough was the first to support the life span development approach in Developmental Psychology. She studied under Leta Stetter-Hollingworth at Columbia University. She was born on August 6, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of nine children in farm family (Stevens and Gardner ).
Florence graduated with a (Bachelor of Pedagogy) in from the Millersville, Pennsylvania Normal School. She earned her B.S. from Columbia University in In she received her M.A. under Leta Hollingworth, also at Columbia.
