Kirk Franklin Biography

(?)—

Gospel singer

Franklin, Kirk, photograph.

"My message is simple and plain," Kirk Franklin insisted in the Los Angeles Times. "I'm trying to change the way people look at gospel music. It's not corny, and it's not hokey. We're not just running around here with some choir robes on, yelling and screaming. It's not about that anymore, kid." The charismatic Franklin has achieved mainstream success thanks to a fusion of hip-hop-flavored style and hardcore religious content. Where other gospel acts had replaced "Jesus" and "God" with "Him" and "You" in hopes of winning over pop listeners, Franklin has never blunted his proselytizing. At the same time, the recordings and concerts by the singer and his gospel group, The Family, have achieved sales that would be respectable even by secular standards and won a bevy of honors. Despite his rise to stardom, Franklin has kept his eye on the real prize. "When I try to reach people, it's by any means necessary," he told the Tri-State Defender. "The purpose is to win them. I spread the word of God through my music, and that's how souls are won—regardless of where it's heard."

Its been a long time since weve seen some fresh faces on the girl group circuit in Gospel. The drought is over as Ziel (pronounced Zeye-El) hits the scene with their debut effort, Genesis.

The Shreveport, Louisiana based quintet of Crystal Bell, Christina Bell, Aphten Jones, Undrea Northcutt, and Keyondra Lockett have created a sound that has already drawn comparisons to the harmonic stylings of the Clark Sisters.

Perhaps this comparison is most evident on the groups cover of the Clark Sisters classic Is My Living In Vain. With more acrobatics than an Olympic gymnast, Ziel masterfully covers this track while customizing it to give it their own vibe. Its a must-hear guaranteed.

Other top songs include Worship Thee, Thats How He Saved Me, and the jazzy Can We Get Away.

The killer vocals of this group are seconded by the stellar production skills of the veteran Derek Clark, Dwight Goodman and Anson Dawkins of the famed Dawkins & Dawkins duo. This pair not only produced the album, but also wrote seven of the nine songs therein. Dawkins even shares lead vocals with the group on
