Michael Faraday ( ) was an influential British scientist who, amongst other discoveries, helped turn electricity into a property that could be easily used.

Faraday was born on 22 September in south London to relatively poor parents. At the age of 14, he left school and started an apprenticeship at a local bookbinder. In his spare time he was an avid reader, teaching himself many scientific concepts. Faraday was thus mostly self-taught and became one of the greatest scientists despite his rudimentary maths.
In , at the age of 20, he received some tickets for a series of lectures by the eminent scientist Humphrey Davy. After the lecture, Michael sent Davy a page document offering notes on the lectures. Davy was impressed and he employed Faraday as an assistant. This later led to a Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, a position to which he was appointed for life.
His early work centred on chemistry. He made a special study of Chlorine and new chlorides

Electromagnetic technology
However, his greatest work was with electricity. In , soon after the Danish chemist, Oersted discovered the phenomenon of electromagnetism, Faraday built two devices to produce what he called electromagnetic rotation: that is a continuous circular motion from the circular magnetic force around a wire.
Ten years later, in , he began his great series of experiments in which he discovered electromagnetic induction. These experiments form the basis of modern electromagnetic technology.
On 29 August , using his "induction ring", Faraday made one of his greatest discoveries - electromagnetic induction: the "induction" or generation of electricity in a wire by means of the electromagnetic effect of a current in another wire. The induction ring was the first electric transformer.

Michael Faraday was an English physicist and chemist who laid the foundations for modern electromagnetism. He is best known for his discoveries of electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism, and electrolysis. Faraday was born in what was then the suburb of Surrey, now part of one of the London districts. Coming from a modest family, his father worked as a blacksmith's apprentice and they had four children. In such conditions, it was difficult for Faraday to expect a good education, but he managed to teach himself a lot. At the age of 14, he became an apprentice to a local bookseller and spent seven years working there, reading numerous books, including Isaac Watts' "The Improvement of the Mind." This book had a great impact on Faraday, and he started implementing the practices described in it in his own life.
