Robert C. O'Brien Biography
Shortly after Robert C. O'Brien's birth in , his family moved from New York City to Amityville, Long Island where he attended parochial school. He was both a frightened and difficult child who sought solace in his love of music. He was admired for his singing and piano playing, but he did not adapt well to either school or family life.
His wife, Sally, described the joys and frustrations of his youth: "There is a sign much in evidence these days which proclaims, 'If you aren't nervous, you just don't understand the situation.' My impression of Robertis that he has, since early childhood, 'understood the situation'--i.e., he was and is a nervous being. The valley represents a world unto itself, a microcosm of the world that used to be. It has its own water, wildlife, and natural resources - all of which remain relatively uncontaminated by the war. It is also a space that instead of being a place of safety turns out to be a place of danger for Ann, specifically after she runs away from Mr. Loomis. She cannot leave the valley because around it are radioactive lands. The valley is also her home, and she eventually ends up leaving it. In a sense she is not leaving the valley, or her home, but the world as she knows it. Whatever is beyond, including danger, is unknown, but as she has developed throughout the story it seems that she is willing to take on all of that.
The safe suit is the main source of contention between Mr. Loomis and his colleague Edward when they were fighting over whether Edward could use it to look for life. Mr. Loomis objected and eventually killed him. At the end of the story, Ann steals it from Mr. Loomis, and as she is walking away from him out of the valley, she expects him to shoot her. Robert Leslie Conly - who went by the pen name Robert C. O’Brien - was born in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Williams College and graduated from the University of Rochester and received a degree in English in He was the third of five children of a well-educated, literate family. At school he was admired for his wit, became editor of the school paper, and showed a great facility with words, especially in writing verse. Originally he wanted to become a pianist and studied at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. However, he changed his mind and decided to study English at the University of Rochester and got a BA degree in English in After graduation, he worked first for Newsweek magazine, and later, after his marriage in , as a reporter and editor for the Washington Times-Herald. From until his death, he worked for the National Geographic magazine. He only started writing fiction in the last ten years of his life.
In , he bought a small farm near Washington, DC, and lived with his wife and four children as a farmer. In his books, he recreated these experiences with the most accurate detail. Be

While there he studied piano at Eastman School of Music, and at one time considered being a musician. Instead, he became an editor and writer for Newsweek magazine from to , and for Pathfinder from to From until the time of his death in he was employed as a writer and editor by the National Geographic Magazine. He made his home in New York City before and in Washington, D.C. after that. He also had a home in Morgan County, West Virginia, after , a place he loved and visited as often as he could. He was married and the father of one son and three daughters. His books include The Silver Crown, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which won the Newbery Award, and A Report From Group His last book, Z is for Zachariah was nearly completed at the time of his death; the last few chapters were written from notes by this wife and one of his daughters.
