      Sophocles, the son of a wealthy arms manufacturer, was born probably in B.C.E. in the deme Colonus near Athens. Of all the ancient playwrights, he scored the most wins in dramatic competitions, and won the most important dramatic festival, the City Dionysia, an unmatched 18 times. He received an education in music, athletics, and dancing, and as a boy of fifteen was chosen to lead the paean (hymn of praise) sung by the chorus of boys after the victory of Salamis. Like most of the ancient playwrights, he acted in the plays he wrote. He showed his musical skill in public, when he played the blind singer Thamyris in his drama of the same name, and played the cithara with such success that he was painted as Thamyris with the cithara in the famous Stoa Poecile ("painted colonnade"), a prominent gathering place in ancient Athens.   Sophocles was also involved in Athenian political and military affairs.     Sophocles was an ancient Greek poet and playwright, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of tragedy in literary history. Born in /6 BCE in Colonus, a small village just outside Athens, Sophocles emerged as a leading figure in the cultural life of Athens during its golden age. He wrote over plays during his lifetime, although only seven have survived in their entirety. These include famous works such as &#;Oedipus Rex,&#; &#;Antigone,&#; and &#;Electra.&#; Sophocles was known for his innovative use of dramatic structure and for introducing the third actor into plays, which allowed for greater complexity in storytelling and character development. His works often explored themes of fate, divine will, and the moral dilemmas faced by individuals. Aside from his literary achievements, Sophocles was also active in public service. He served as a treasurer, a general, and was even involved in the political and military affairs of Athens. His contributions to both the arts and public life left an indelible mark on Greek culture.

    Sophocles (; Ancient Greek: Σοφοκλῆς, pronounced [ɛ̂ːs], Sophoklễs; c. /6 – winter /5 BC) is one of three ancient Greektragedians, at least one of whose plays has survived in full. His first plays were written later than, or contemporary with, those of Aeschylus; and earlier than, or contemporary with, those of Euripides. Sophocles wrote over plays, but only seven have survived in a complete form: Ajax, Antigone, Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus. For almost fifty years, Sophocles was the most celebrated playwright in the dramatic competitions of the city-state of Athens which took place during the religious festivals of the Lenaea and the Dionysia. He competed in thirty competitions, won twenty-four, and was never judged lower than second place. Aeschylus won thirteen competitions, and was sometimes defeated by Sophocles; Euripides won four.
