Escritor, abogado y comentarista político, Richard North Patterson nació el 22 de febrero de en Berkeley, California. Estudió tanto en la Universidad Ohio Wesleyan como en la Case Western Reserve University School of Law, tras lo cual trabajó como abogado en Ohio y en Washington D.C.
Desde hace años North Patterson ejerce su profesión en el Advisory Council de J Street. El autor es también miembro del Council on Foreign Relations.
En lo literario, estudió escritura creativa en la Universidad de Alabama.
