(Siglo I a.C.) Arquitecto romano, autor de tratado Sobre la arquitectura. Se desconoce el lugar y año de nacimiento del arquitecto, que vivió durante la época de Julio César y Octavio Augusto. Maffei le consideró de Verona; otros creen que debió de nacer en Placencia, y algunos le juzgan natural de Mola de Gaeta, la antigua Formia; esta última suposición parece ser la mejor fundada.

Background
Architecture has its written western origins within the text of De Architectura but the author of the text, remains obscure.
An examination of the praenomen, ‘Marcus’ and cognomen, ‘Pollio’, parts of the name can indicate birth and family details as well as a potential description. However the nomen by which he is commonly referred to ‘Vitruvius’,remains obscure and so it warrants further contextual examination.
This can be achieved by examination of the manuscripts, his apparent name structure, and a timeline of his life including known historical events and people.
Examining the author of De Architectura in these contexts extends the current limited viewpoint, through interpolation, into multiple contextual interpretations.

Marcus Vitruvius Pollio was a Roman architect, author, and civil and military engineer who lived during the 1st century BC. Known only through his ten-volume work ‘De architectura’, even his full name is in doubt; only ‘Vitruvius’ has been confirmed. The first printed edition of his work was by Fra Giovanni Sulpitius

For the facts of Vitruvius’ life we are dependent almost exclusively on the internal evidence of his only known work, the treatise De architectura, In the manuscripts of this work and in references to it by other classical writers he is referred to simply by his family name (nomen), Vitruvius, The attempt by Paul Thielscher to show that his full name was Lucius Vitruvius Mamurra, and to identify him with the Mamurra who served as chief engineer under Julius Caesar, is not generally accepted. There does not, on the other hand, seem to be any good reason to question the evidence of the late third-century writer Faventinus (see below) that his last name (cognomen) was Pollio.
The known facts of Vitruvius’ career are that he worked in some unspecified capacity for Julius Caesar; that he was subsequently entrusted with the maintenance of siege engines and artillery by Caesar’s grandnephew and adopted heir, Octavianus, later the Emperor Augustus; and that on retirement from this post he came under the patronage of Augustus’ sister, Octavia (I, praef., 2
