Lalita Tademy ( )

In , author Lalita Tademy left her prestigious and well-paid position of vice-president and general manager at Sun Microsystems and began to search for a new direction for her life. Her long corporate climb, including stints at Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Memorex, led her in her 40s to a life of hour days, a long commute to Silicon Valley, and little time to herself. Although she loved the challenges of her corporate rise, she quit her job and with a three-year financial cushion began researching her family history.

After several years of extensive genealogical research that included gathering approximately 1, documents – photographs, census records, diaries, letters, birth certificates, newspaper articles, wills, land deeds, and also the bill of sale for her great-great-great-great-grandmother – she began to write. Tademy wove these historical materials into a novel that blends fact and fiction and tells the story of her maternal Louisiana ancestors over the turbulent years from to , from slavery to freedom to Reconstruction to Jim Crow.

In the past several years, there has been an explosion of interest in genealogy. In part, this interest has been sparked by the proliferation of the Internet. The ease with which an amateur genealogist can locate information among the many available databases has led many to search for the answers to questions such as: Who am I? and Where did I come from? Lalita Tad-emy&#x;s novel, Cain River, is one author&#x;s response to questions of family origin. Tademy has identified and explored her maternal past. She has woven family, history, and fiction into her first novel and, by doing so, she has created a whole story from the pieces of her past.

Lalita Tademy was born in Berkeley, California, in , the youngest of four children born to Nathan Green Tademy Jr. and Willie Dee Billes. Initially Tademy attended Longfellow Elementary School in Berkeley, but in her family moved to Castro Valley, California. After this move, Tademy attended Parsons Elementary School, A.B.
