Dagens dato for 35 år siden var en trist dag i musikkhistorien. Da døde musikeren Radka Toneff, bare 30 år gammel. I løpet av sin korte karriere utga hun tre album. Det andre av dem, It don&#;t come easy (),hører til blant perlene i min musikksamling.
Radka blir oftest omtalt bare med fornavn. Men det var etternavnet Toneff som gjorde meg oppmerksom på henne. Faren hennes, Toni Toneff, drev Film &#; og fotolaboratoriet, som holdt til like ved fars butikk i Bjerregaards gate, og de to hadde litt kontakt.
Radka vokste opp i et musikalsk hjem. Faren var flyktning fra Bulgaria, og hadde bakgrunn som folkesanger. Det var nok en stolt far som tok bilde av Radka som niåring ved pianoet hjemme.
Mitt første musikalske møte med Radka var da jeg lånte albumet It don&#;t come easy på biblioteket. Senere hadde jeg det på kassett i bilen, og spilte det om igjen og om igjen. Albumet inneholder sterke tekster i suveren musikalsk innpakning. Tittelsporet og tre andre spor representerer stemningen jeg opplever i dette albumet :

あの名盤スティーブ・ドブロゴスSteve Dorbrogoszのピアノとのデュオ『フェアリーテイルズFAIRYTALES』を吹き込んだ直後、82年に30歳の若さでその短い生涯を閉じてしまったノルウェーの伝説的歌姫、ラドカ・トネフ(25 June – 21 October )。彼女の死後26年（年）にリリースされた貴重なアウトテイク集の再発盤がここに来て昨年末登場した。

彼女の死は自殺とみられているが、その状況を察するに更に哀感が漂ってくる。

Radka Toneff er blitt en legende i norsk jazz. Ikke bare fordi hun døde ung. Mest fordi hun har inspirert omtrent samtlige norske jazzsangerinner som kom etter henne.
Radka var bare 30 år da hun døde i Gjennom tre platealbum, utallige klubbjobber, konserter, turnéer og festivaler, ved utvist interesse for norsk kulturliv i klare meninger, og ansvar for kulturarbeidernes situasjon ved å ta lederskapet i Foreningen Norske Jazzmusikere, ble hun en markant person i vårt musikkliv.
Hun var født i Oslo (), vokste opp på Kolbotn i en musikalsk familie, faren var den bulgarske folkesangeren Toni Toneff; hun viste tidlig talenter som pianist, lekende improvisator, danser og sanger. Faren hadde seriøse musikalske ambisjoner på vegne av datteren, men Radka gikk nok i en annen retning gjennom lokale jenteband, rhythm&blues og innpass i Club 7-miljøet med bl.a. bluesbandet &#;Sekt&#;. Hun platedebuterte med &#;Visa om fabrikken&#; med det progressive teaterensemblet &#;Svartkatten&#;.
Under utdannelsen på Musikkonservatoriet () sang hun med jazzrockbandet &#;Unis&#;, der blant andre Jon Balke og Jon Eberson var med. Hun møtte bassisten Arild Andersen, som skulle

One of the most overused word in tRadka Tonefhe English language is classic, with critics often hailing the latest book, play or album a “classic.” More often than not, this is hyperbole, and it’s only much later, that the same critics realise that they were rather fulsome in their praise and too quick to call the album a classic. However, when Norwegian singer Radka Toneff and American Steve Dobrogosz released Fairytales in the autumn of , it was to critical acclaim with the album quite rightly being called a future classiske.
Straight away, this future classic was a hugely popular album, with Fairytales winning the hearts and minds of Norwegian music lovers. Sadly, just two weeks after the release of Fairytales, tragedy struck when thirty-year old Radka Toneff was found dead in the woods of Bygdøy after taking an overdose of sleeping pills. Norwegian music lovers were in mourning as they had lost one of their greatest jazz singers, just five years after winning a Spellemannprisen in for her debut album Winter Poem.
