The Path to the First Working Difference Engine: Pehr Georg and Edvard Scheutz

In the early 19th century, British mathematician Charles Babbage captured the imagination of the scientific community when he conceived the idea of building a mechanical computer capable of automatically generating mathematical tables. However, despite over a decade of effort, Babbage struggled to translate his ambitious Analytical Engine into reality.

Half a world away in Sweden, an unlikely duo would pick up where Babbage left off. Lawyer and linguist Pehr Georg Scheutz and his engineer son Edvard dedicated over 15 years of their lives to making Babbage’s vision a reality. Their success in constructing the first complete and commercially viable difference engine in stands today as a testament both to human perseverance and the power of collaboration between father and son.

Early Exposure to Babbage’s Ideas

Pehr Georg Scheutz’s first exposure to Babbage’s early computing machines came in through an unlikely source – a translation gig. While translating portions of Babbage’s published lectures “On the Ec

Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted.
Albert Einstein

The Swede Pehr Georg Scheutz (–) was a remarkable man—a lawyer, translator, and inventor. When he read a description of the differential engine of Babbage in , he decided to build such a machine. And, despite the fact, that he was neither a mathematician (like Babbage), nor an engineer, he didn&#;t have enough money at his disposal, and he lived in a country, that was much behind England from a technological point of view, nevertheless, he succeeded. Pehr Georg (with his son Edvard) managed to build the first workable differential engine, and the first printing calculating machine in the world.

Scheutz initially learned about Charles Babbage and his machine, when he started to translate several chapters from Babbage&#;s very successful book Economy of Machinery and Manufactures, for his Journal för Manufakturer och Hushållning in From this book Scheutz learned also about the technique of computing mathematical tables, using the &#;method of differences&#;. Intrigued by this account in Babbage&#;s Economy, Scheutz discovered a more detailed discussion of Babbage&

Georg Scheutz originally had ideas about becoming a mining engineer, but his university did not have the courses necessary to fulfill the requirements, and thus he graduated with a degree in law. He practiced law in various capacities for about 11 years, when his finances, buoyed by inheritances, were sufficient for him to set himself up in business as a newspaper publisher. In Georg Scheutz published a small book containing an invention which was an improvement on Napier'
