পরাধীনতার নিরন্ধ্র অন্ধকারে অসহায় নিপীড়িত মানুষের দুঃসময়ে তিনি নিয়ে এলেন মুক্তির বার্তা । দিশেহারা পথভ্রান্ত মানুষকে দীক্ষিত করলেন নবজীবনের মহামন্ত্রে ,ভারতবর্ষের আপামর জনতাকে তিনি জাতীয়তাবাদের প্রবল উন্মাদনায় মাতিয়ে তুললেন ।

সেই নবজাগ্রত জাতির হাতে তিনিই তুলে দিলেন ‘অহিংসা’ নামক অমোঘ এক অস্ত্র ।তিনি আর কেউ নন, তিনি ভারতবাসীর সর্বজনপ্রিয় ,জাতির জনক এবং অন্যতম দেশনায়ক মহাত্মা গান্ধী । তিনি রক্তের বদলে রক্ত চাইলেন না ,আঘাতের প্রত্যুত্তরে প্রত্যাঘাতের কথা কখনো বলেননি ।তাঁর কণ্ঠে ভারতাত্মার শ্বাশ্বত সুরই প্রতিধ্বনিত হয়েছিল । তিনি চেয়েছিলেন মানুষকে আত্মশক্তিতে বলীয়ান করতে, আত্মত্যাগের মহান ব্রতে দেশবাসীকে উদ্বুদ্ধ করতে। তাঁর অহিংসা তাই দুর্বলের মুখোশ নয়; নয় ভীরুর হুঙ্কার ।

১৮৬৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে ২ অক্টোবর গুজরাটের পোরবন্দরে ভূমিষ্ঠ হন ভবিষ্যৎ ভারতের স্বাধীনতার যজ্ঞের অন্যতম পুরোহিত মহাত্মা গান্ধী যার বাল্য নাম ছিল মোহনদাস করমচাঁদ গান্ধী । তার পিতার নাম করমচাঁদ উত্তমচাঁদ গান্ধী এবং মাতা পুতলি বাই । পারিবারিক আদর্শের বেদি মঞ্চেই তাঁর মহৎ জীবনের দীক্ষা। পিতার তেজস্বিতা, সত্যনিষ্ঠা ও বুদ্ধি এবং মাতার ধর্মপ্রাণতা ,ক্ষমা, করুণা সহিষ্ণুতা প্রভৃতি মানবিক গুণ তিনি উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রেই পেয়েছিলেন ।
