Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontė were the authors of some of the best-loved books in the English language. Charlotte’s novel Jane Eyre (), Emily’s Wuthering Heights (), and Anne’s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall () were written in this house over a hundred and fifty years ago, yet their power still moves readers today.
To find two writers of genius in one family would be rare, but to find several writers in one household is unique in the history of literature. Charlotte and Emily Bronte are ranked among the world’s greatest novelists; Anne is a powerful underrated author, and both their father, the Revd. Patrick Brontė, and brother Branwell also saw their own works in print.
The Brontės, published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell, were acknowledged at the time for their directness and powerful emotional energy, qualities which were sometimes interpreted by the critics as ‘coarse’ and ‘brutal’.

Such is certainly the case with the children of Patrick Brontë, an Irish cleric who married a Cornish woman and then moved to a tiny town in Yorkshire, far from the leading minds of the day. Bereft of influence and forced by circumstances to look out for each other, the resulting development of literary genius has yet to be matched.
The three surviving Brontë sisters – Charlotte, Emily and Anne &#; none of whom lived past the age of forty, left us with five incandescent novels – as well as a story that matches the dramatic intensity of the Brontë imagination.

It was while he was at Cambridge that Patrick Branty, as his surname is spelled in the list of admissions, changed it to Bronte, but it was not till later that he signed himself Patrick Bronte. He was appointed to a curacy at Wethersfield in Essex and later took a curacy at Wellington in Shropshire before shifting to Hartshead at Yorkshire. There he met and married Maria Branwell a gentle, loving, delicate woman belonging to a respectable middle-class family. While still at Hartshead Mrs. Bronte had two children and they were named Maria and Elizabeth.
Then Mr. Bronte was appointed to still another curacy, this time near Bradford, and here Mrs. Bronte had four more children. They were named Charlotte, Patrick Branwell, Emily and Anne. A year before his marriage Mr. Bronte had published at his own expense a volume of verse entitled Cottage Poems, and a year after that another, The Rural Minstrel. While living near Bradford he wrote a novel, called The Cottage in the Wood. People who have read these productions say that they are devoid of merit.

Charlotte was born on 21 April , Emily on 30 July and Anne on 17 January all in Thornton, Yorkshire. They had two sisters, both of whom died in childhood and a brother, Branwell. Their father, Patrick, was an Anglican clergyman who was appointed as the rector of the village of Haworth, on the Yorkshire moors. After the death of their mother in , their Aunt Elizabeth came to look after the family.
All three sisters attended different schools at various times as well as being taught at home. The Brontë children were often left alone together in their isolated home and all began to write stories at an early age.

In , Charlotte and Emily went to Brussels to improve their French, but had to return home early after the death of their aunt Elizabeth. Charlotte returned to Brussels an English teacher in By , the family were back together at Haworth. By this stage, Branwell was addicted to drink and drugs.
