The following interview is between Brenda Hillman (BH) and one of the Head Editors of Kiln: Amanda VanNierop (AV).
AV: Our theme for the magazine this year is “Out of Focus.” We’re interested in narratives that go unspoken or unrecognized in the background. What images does the phrase “Out of Focus” invoke to you?

BH: Interesting. Well, obvious photography. And then thinking about it as not necessarily a positive term… And yet, I can think of ways in the arts in which being “out of focus” and being in a blurred, liminal space can be a good thing. I think it has both positive and negative connotations

i could sense the dear worms
through the grillwork fence,
twists & coils of flexi-script, remaking
the soil by resisting it
After the ride in the police van
telling jokes, our ziplocked handcuffs
pretty tight,
when the presiding officer asked:

— Do you have any tattoos?
— Yes, officer, i have two.
— What are they?
— Well, i have a black heart on my inner thigh &
an alchemical sign on my ankle.
— Please spell that?
— Alchemical. A-L-C-H-E-M-I-C-A-L.
— What is that?
— It's basically a moon, a lily, a star & a flame.

Brenda Hillman has published more than ten collections of poetry, all from Wesleyan University Press. In five of her most recent collections, Extra Hidden Life, Among the Days (); Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire (); Practical Water (), Pieces of Air in the Epic (), and Cascadia (), each book receives her ‘sustained attention’ to one the natural elements. A Publishers Weekly starred review of Extra Hidden Life, Among the Days elucidates, “Having written four previous books each addressing one of the four traditional elements of nature, she considers wood as a fifth element, making her hieroglyphic way through ‘forests of grief’ as might one of the book’s beloved beetles, ‘pressing/ their whole jeweled bodies/ in the beauty of the bark.’ Neither simply empirical nor transcendental, Hillman’s poetry takes what she calls ‘woodmind’—a sort of deep attention to natural processes—and applies it to notions of human action, recollection, imagination, and craft.” Her most recent collection, In a Few Minutes Before Later (), is her third book about time.

Practical Water won the LA Times Book Award for Poetry. Seasonal Works with Letters on Fire re
