Something Like Fate

January 23,
This review is going to be painful to write because I tend to enjoy Susane Colasanti's work. When It Happens and Waiting for You are two of my favorite YA books. Sadly, there's no cosmic law that prevents good authors from sometimes writing bad stories, and Something Like Fate proves it.

More than likely, you've already read the synopsis and have an idea of what the story is about. However, the synopsis is slightly misleading. Let's start with the first slightly misleading statement: Lani and Erin are best friends. This in itself isn't a lie, but the write-up would have you believing that Erin is deserving of this friendship. Unfortunately for the reader, we are left wondering why Lani even bothers with Erin since it's obvious after the first few chapters that Erin is a fatuous, volatile, selfish bitch. She is oblivious to everyone but herself and generally treats Lani more like an accessory than a friend.

The second misleading thing about the synopsis is that it makes it seem like Lani begins a secret romance with Jason while Jason is still dating Erin. From the synopsis I thought this was going to be one of those books where the protagonist
In early (aka The Year Unpro Got Her Groove Back), I was at Borders (aka the Unpro Mothership), and picked up a YA book with a cute cover.  Upon skimming the first few chapters, I was immediately transported back to high school when, like her winning protagonist, I was the braniac girl in love with the witty hipster boy.  Oh, that was fun.  A year later when I started writing fiction of my own, I contacted the book's author and found her to be a lovely person in every way.  Today, she has taken time out of her busy NYC writer's life to stop by my lil ole blog.  The book?  When It Happens.  The author?  Susane Colasanti, who has since published two more novels, Take Me There and Waiting for You.  Her latest,Something Like Fate, is out May 4.  The verdict?  Ms. Colasanti is awesome.  Read on:

You were a high school teacher in New York City for almost ten years. Now that you're no longer teaching full-time, how do you keep up with how teens talk, what they're listening to, and what's on their minds?

It was definitely much easier to keep up with the latest scene when I was surrounded by kids a

La pluie, les garçons et autres choses mystérieuses

This book surprised me. Reading other people's revies, I was a bit wary of reading it, but I got it free at the library, so I said "what the heck?" The characters, to me, were extremely relateable. I could tell why they did the things they did and they all seemed like they would make great friends.
One of the things I didn't like was the switching of the point of views. Now, I do like reading other characters' perspectives, but I didn't like how everything was repeated. Like you'd hear the same day three times in a row so nothing was surprising. You knew what was going to happen. But then again, it did have its advantages. You got to know why characters did what they did.
Overall, this book was pretty realistic and fairly enjoyable. The one thing I didn't like was Nicole's relationship with her teacher, but then again, stuff like what could have happened always freaks me out.
So, I would reccomend this book to just about any body. But just be warned: You will hear the same day three times, just by different people's perspectives.
