In , Shona co-founded the New Zealand Dance Company (NZDC) and fulfilled a successful tenure of nine years as Chief Executive/Artistic Director NZDC. In , Shona became Artistic Director of the prestigious Auckland Arts Festival.

Shona is one of New Zealand’s outstanding cross platform artists and an innovative choreographer for dance, theatre and film and also a director, dance filmmaker, teacher and interactive installation artist.

A Distinguished Graduate of the New Zealand School of Dance, Shona was a dancer with Sydney based company Darc Swan in , subsequently joining Limbs Dance Company, where she was a dancer, rehearsal director and choreographer from to In , Shona performed with Douglas Wright & Dancers in New York, was a founding member of the NZ based Douglas Wright Dance Company and became its Associate Director in , touring to the London Dance Umbrella and the Holland Dance Festival.

The Auckland Festival Trust would like to share that Shona McCullagh, our Artistic Director, will complete her four year term at the conclusion of Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival (AAF) – in March next year.

Shona has successfully led the artistic direction of AAF over the last three festivals since through tumultuous times with great determination, flexibility and creative resourcefulness.

The Festival championed New Zealand artists and launched the Festival’s first online programme. This platform ensured the online premieres of several NZ works in the edition, as all live events were cancelled due to the pandemic.

The return to a full international festival in March was very well received on a range of levels, including a diverse and critically rewarding programme, again including the commissioning and premiere of significant new works.

In , Shona travelled to the US, England and Canada, performing with Douglas Wright & Dancers in New York. On her return to New Zealand, she was voted 's Best Dancer by Metro magazine. She was a founding member of the Douglas Wright Dance Company and became its Associate Director in , touring to the London Dance Umbrella and the Holland Dance Festival. Shona has choreographed many successful works for companies such as Limbs, Douglas Wright Dance Company, and The Royal New Zealand Ballet.

She has also created work for theatre, television and film, including sequences for Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring and King Kong and Auckland Theatre Company's Equus, Sweet Charity and Cabaret.

Jenny Stevenson started her ballet training in England at the age of 8 years, when she attended the Legat School of Ballet, a boarding school where Russian ballet in the style of Nicholas Legat was taught and interspersed with school work. On arriving in New Zealand at the age of 11 Jenny began training at the Nettleton Edwards School of Dance where she remained until joining the New Zealand Ballet Company in for a short contract. Jenny then was accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance and was amongst the first group of graduates. After another season with the NZ Ballet she returned to Auckland where she danced as a Happen Inn dancer for television.

Wishing to pursue an interest in modern dance, Jenny moved to Australia in where she trained and completed a tour with the Australian Dance Theatre. On her return to New Zealand to marry, she moved to Wellington with her husband Jim Stevenson and in founded the Dance Centre which offered many different types of dance training for both adults and children. The Dance Centre ran for 15 years with several other partner/teachers while Jenny travelled and lived overseas with Jim.
