A husband and wife were found dead with gunshot wounds at their home in a quiet Long Island town, and police believe the incident may have been a murder-suicide.
Officers responded to the home on Parsons Landing in Islip around a.m. Thursday morning after a caller told them about a man who had been shot outside the house, according to Suffolk County police. It was a garbage collector going on his typical route who found the man, later identified as year-old William Clifford.
The garbage truck driver tried to help the man, but to no avail.
After officers got to the scene, they found a woman dead inside a bedroom at the home as well, police said. The woman was identified as year-old Eileen Clifford, the man's wife.
William Clifford is believed to have shot and killed his wife in the bedroom before turning the gun on himself in the driveway, according to police.
"Neighbors described them as very nice. It’s a tight-knit community. They were very friendly with the neighbors," said Suffolk County Police Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer.
The couple had been married for 20 years, and police said there was no history of domestic violence.

The election was hotly contested, with 24 candidates vying for 12 elected seats on the central executive committee (CEC).

Eight members of the previous CEC were not re-elected, including several who were candidates in the last election. They include Dr Ang Yong Guan, Mr Harish Pillay, Mr Jeffrey Khoo, Mr Nadarajah Loganathan and Mr Lim Cher Hong.
Of these, all except Dr Ang had sought re-election.
The new CEC was voted in by the 90 cadres present, comprising the party’s inner circle. It will later co-opt two more cadres to form a member body, and then decide who will take up party leadership positions within it. This includes the party’s leader, its secretary-
Prosecutors revealed more grim details Friday in the death of a Long Island woman found nearly three weeks after she went missing, pointing the blame on her husband who's been accused of murdering the mother of four.
Officials linked the killing back to early November, when prosecutors say Marcello Molinari, 43, first found out his wife, Melissa, had allegedly been involved in an extramarital affair. The family had been on a trip to Disneyland that was cut short when the husband found out.
The Centereach parents returned to their Long Island home Nov. 5 where they planned to live together until the couple could sell the house and finalize a divorce, prosecutors in Suffolk County said Friday.
But two weeks later, Melissa Molinari went missing.
Police have said the mother was last spotted by her family leaving her home on Lolly Lane in Centereach on Nov. 21, meaning that she didn't spend Thanksgiving with her children. She did not take her car, police said.
Marcello Molinari allegedly told police that Melissa left on Nov. 23 with an unknown man after getting into an argument on the previous day. Police say a friend — not her husband — reported the mother missing.
