Mairi Rankin
Born in Mabou, Mairi Rankin is a fiddler and step dancer who has been influenced by some of the best Cape Breton traditional musicians and instructors on the island. She has developed her own unique style by being immersed in this rich musical culture, pulling from her native Cape Breton and her strong Scottish roots from North Uist. Mairi has toured nationally and internationally as a performer and educator in both fiddle and step dance. She has performed as a solo artist, a side musician, in small combos and as a member of both the Cape Breton super group Beòlach and the highly acclaimed Scottish / Irish / Canadian band The Outside Track. Mairi has recorded one solo album, three with Beòlach, seven with The Outside Track, and one as a duo with cellist Eric Wright. Mairi will be teaming up with Amelia and Dirk Powell for the Perfect Pairings concert as well as performing with Beòlach this year.

Mairi Rankin plays the fiddle, step dances and hails from Mabou, Cape Breton Island on the east coast of Canada. Cape Breton is a bit of a hidden gem having been crowned the no.1 Island in North America by readers of Conde Nast Traveler for the second year in a row. It is also an island steeped in rich musical culture that has its own distinct style and sound. Mairi spends her time touring with 3 groups; Beolach - a Cape Breton based quartet on the go for over 20 years, The Outside Track - a band with members hailing from Ireland and Scotland, and with Eric Wright, a Vermont cellist now living in Ontario, Canada.

It’s rare to catch Màiri Rankin sitting still. The Oran had a chance to chat with Màiri recently as she was rehearsing in preparation for a trip to Denmark for a five-day festival.
Màiri reclaimed Mabou as her home base this fall after 10 years living away in Halifax and Vancouver. “It’s good to be back”, says Màiri. “It’s been a crazy busy year, which is the best way to put it. But that’s good in the music business.” Having recorded two albums this year; one with Eric Wright of the group Fretless, as well as with her band, The Outside Track plus time on the road as a performing artist all over the world, crazy busy only barely describes it accurately.
She describes the processes for each project as completely different. “Putting an album together with The Outside Track took a long time because we are all over the map”, says Rankin.
