Little is known about Luke, the author of the books of Lukeand Actsin the Bible. We do know he was a physician and the only Gentile to write any part of the New Testament. Paul’s letter to the Colossians draws a distinction between Luke and other colleagues “of the circumcision,” meaning the Jews (Colossians ). Luke is the only New Testament writer clearly identifiable as a non-Jew.
Luke was the author of the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. Luke does not name himself in either of his books, but Paul mentions him by name in three epistles. Both Luke and Acts are addressed to the same person, Theophilus (Luke ; Acts ). No one knows exactly who Theophiluswas, but we know that Luke’s purpose in writing the two companion books was so that Theophilus would know with certainty about the person and work of Jesus Christ (Luke ). Perhaps Theophilus had already received the basics of the Christian doctrine but had not as yet been completely grounded in them.

1. Identity. Luke is mentioned by name only three times in the NT—all by Paul while in prison (Col ; 2 Tim ; Philem 24). He never mentions his own name in his writings unless it is in an Armenian reading of Acts , based on a “Western” text which says “I Luke” (F. F. Bruce, The Acts of the Apostles, p. 5). However, his identity was certainly known to Theophilus and, no doubt, to the reading public of that day. Luke does identify himself in a measure in the “we” sections of Acts. All the leading associates of Paul (mentioned in the epistles) are eliminated from possible authorship by data in Acts, except Titus and Luke. Since no case can be made for Titus, Luke implies his own authorship. This inference is supported by unanimous early tradition. There are, then, valid autobiographical references by Luke particularly in Acts. His personality shows through in the gospel also.

Who Was Luke in the New Testament?
Claims to fame: Luke is a physician and Greek-trained historian who lives in Troas, he writes the longest gospel, which bears his name to this day. We know that Luke traveled with the Apostle Paul throughout the Mediterranean.

Luke is only mentioned by name three times in Scripture, and all three references are in Paul’s letters: Colossians 4, 2 Timothy 4, and Philemon 1. Most biblical scholars support Luke as the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. We can come to this conclusion because of the similarity of writing styles and vocabulary in both books; another reason is that Luke used the term “we” several times to refer to his missionary travels in the book of Acts.
