George VI, Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor, was born on December 14, , in York Cottage, Sandringham, Norfolk. He was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. George VI received his education at Osborne and the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth. In , he became a sub-lieutenant on the warship "Collingwood" and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant for his participation in the Battle of Jutland in In March , he transferred to the Royal Air Force and served as a pilot on the Western Front, eventually attaining the rank of flight commander.
