아버지 김수영씨는 대구사범대학 출신의 국민학교 교사로 재직하고 있었는데, 년 5월 전국교직원노동조합의 전신이 되는 교원노조를 결성하는데 동참하여 대구지부장과 교원노조 회지의 집필자로 활동하는 등 교원노조를 결성하는데 중요한 역할을 하였습니다.
그러나 교단에서 추방당하였고, 전업사를 차려 생계를 꾸려나갔습니다.
김광석이 5살이 되던 해에 장충단공원 인근의 서울 중국 장충동으로 이사를 갔고, 년 옆 동네인 종로구 창신등으로 다시 이사하였습니다.
경희중학교에 입학하고 나서는 특별활동으로 현악반에 들어가 바이올린 등의 다양한 악기를 배우며 악보 보는 법을 익혔고, 년 대광고등학교에 입학해서는 성가대와 합창단에서 활동하기도 하였습니다.

명지대학교 경영학과에 입학한 후 젊은 예수라는 노래책을 받고, '라디오에서 나오던 사랑 노래들이 아니라 세상을 향해 부르는 노래들'에 관심을 갖게 되면서, 대학연합 노래패 서클인 '연합메아리'에 가입해 첫 음악 활동을 시작하게 됩니다.
같은 해인 년 9월, 서울특별시 중구 무교동에 있는 '코스모스 코러스'라는 레스토랑에서 처음으로 노래하기 시작했으며, 이 이후로도 신촌과 이대 아 등지를 떠돌며 밤무대에 섰습니다.
기어코 명지대학교로부터 학사경고를 받게 됐고, 가족들의 반대가 더욱 심해지기 시작하였습니다. 년 1월 6개월 단기 사병으로 군 복무를 했고, 제대 이후 그의 형인 김광복은 김광석의 음악에 대한 열정을 알고 고려대학교 앞에 '고리'라는 카페를 차려주었습니다.

We must have spent a solid hour exploring Kim Kwang-seok Memorial Street. We admired the artwork, listened to the buskers and grabbed a coffee at one of the rooftop cafes. The atmosphere had been so positive, a genuine celebration of the man’s life and music.
Now, following an enthusiastic recommendation from the yellow-jacketed tourist guide volunteer, it was time to dig a little deeper. Thus we made our way to Kim Kwang-seok Story House, a museum about the life and times of Korea’s most cherished singer-songwriter.

As with the memorial street, there’s no charge to enter this little museum. Just head right in and say hello to the friendly receptionist. She&#;ll definitely ask you to sign the guestbook. Moreover, she may want to mark your visit on their social media feed by asking you to pose for a photograph.
