Kim Jee-woon is probably the most successful filmmaker working in South Korea at the moment, with his films presenting a combination of artistry and entertainment rarely seen on screen.
Kim was born in in Seoul and initially he worked in the theater, first as an actor and then as a director, before making the transition to cinema in with The Quiet Family. Starting with his third movie A Tale of Two Sisters, he began receiving recognition for his scripts, direction, and unique visual style. His next productions were all successful both commercially and critically, to the point where he was transferred to Hollywood, where he shot The Last Stand with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Three years later, he returned to South Korea with The Age of Shadows, which was selected as the countrys entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 89th Academy Awards. Here are his eight films, ranked from worst to best.

Born in the South Korean capital, Kim Jee-Woon was first attracted to theater. This is why he began his career by going on stage and involved himself in the staging of several theatrical plays including Hot Sea and Movie Movie , in which he also played a role. He then tried his hand at writing and won a competition with a screenplay entitled Wonderful Seasons .
Building on this success, Kim Jee-Woon was able to begin directing his first feature film in , a horror comedy called The Quiet Family . He made another comedy two years later, Foul King , and directed one of the short films which constitute the triptych 3 stories from beyond , a horror film in which ghosts and ghosts appear. His next film, 2 Sisters , shot in , is in the same register, that of new Asian fantasy cinema.
Two years later, the filmmaker shot A bittersweet life , a dark and ultra-violent thriller. He proves that he is very comfortable when it comes to staging shootouts and other settling of scores. In ,
Kim Jee-woon is a filmmaker who not only adores the cinema, but tries to push his style a bit farther than his contemporaries. While other filmmakers that are uniquely South Korean — a strict theme, sensibility, or historical importance — Kim makes films that are unique love letters to the genre films, commenting and elevating the material beyond parody or imitation.

As a child, Kim’s father was a huge film buff, taking Kim to the theaters countless times.
