Sir Francis Drake ( – January 28, ) was an English sailor, slave-trader, pirate, explorer and &#; during the Armada &#; vice-admiral of the British fleet. He captured a fortune in gold from raiding Spanish ships and ports. He was also the first Englishman to sail all the way around the world. Because of this, he was made a knight by Queen Elizabeth I. His rise from commoner to great war hero and influential person was rare for his time. In English, Drake means a male waterfowl, but in Spanish, such was his reputation that Drake came to mean &#;El Draque&#; &#; a frightening dragon.

Early life

Francis Drake was born in Tavistock, Devon around , the eldest of twelve sons. In , his father, Edmund Drake fled from Devon to Kent. He claimed it was due to religious persecution from his protestant beliefs. However, there is evidence, he was actually fleeing the law due to his association with the Hawkins family and their involvement in piracy and theft.

In Kent, his father was ordained a deacon and Francis was given an apprentice on a sailing boat used for coastal trade. Francis was a good worker who deeply impressed the boat&#;s captain and he became a key part of the boat&#;s crew

Sir Francis Drake was an English explorer involved in piracy and illicit slave trading who became the second person ever to circumnavigate the globe. In , Drake was chosen as the leader of an expedition intended to pass around South America, through the Strait of Magellan, and explore the coast that lay beyond. Drake successfully completed the journey and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I upon his triumphant return. In , Drake saw action in the English defeat of the Spanish Armada, though he died in from dysentery after undertaking an unsuccessful raiding mission.

Early Life

Like many of his contemporaries, no birth records exist for Drake. It is believed he was born between and , based on dates of later events.

Drake was the eldest of 12 sons born to Mary Myllwaye (spelled "Mylwaye" in some cases) and Edmund Drake. Edmund was a farmer on the estate of Lord Francis Russell, the second earl of Bedford.

Drake was eventually apprenticed to a merchant who sailed coastal waters trading goods between England and France. He took to navigation well and was soon enlisted by his relatives, the Hawkinses. They were privateer

Francis Drake was born in Tavistock, Devon in around and went to sea at an early age. In , Drake made one of the first English slaving voyages as part of a fleet led by his cousin John Hawkins, bringing African slaves to work in the 'New World'. All but two ships of the expedition were lost when attacked by a Spanish squadron. The Spanish became a lifelong enemy for Drake and they in turn considered him a pirate.

In and , Drake made two profitable trading voyages to the West Indies. In , he commanded two vessels in a marauding expedition against Spanish ports in the Caribbean. He saw the Pacific Ocean and captured the port of Nombre de Dios on the Isthmus of Panama. He returned to England with a cargo of Spanish treasure and a reputation as a brilliant privateer. In , Drake was secretly commissioned by Elizabeth I to set off on an expedition against the Spanish colonies on the American Pacific coast. He sailed with five ships, but by the time he reached the Pacific Ocean in October only one was left, Drake's flagship the Pe
